Tandang Sora National High School (TSNHS), named after the National Heroine, Melchora Aquino (also known as Tandang Sora), is located in Barangay Tandang Sora, Quezon City. Surrounded by Pasong Tamo, Sauyo, Bahay Toro, Sangandaan, and Talipapa, TSNHS has a rich history rooted in community collaboration and educational innovation.
Originally established as the Culiat High School-Tandang Sora Annex in SY 1999-2000, it began with 320 First Year students, 8 teachers, and 1 staff member, led by Dr. Erlinda Santos. The school’s early years were marked by challenging conditions, with classes held in makeshift classrooms and under the shade of the barangay hall. Despite these limitations, it quickly grew, thanks to the concerted efforts of Dr. Maria Noemi M. Moncada, CHS Principal, Congressman Dante Liban, and Barangay Chairman Sabino Apo.
Over the years, the school had made significant strides. The construction of classroom buildings, increased student enrollment, and the addition of qualified teachers contributed to its growth. Notable principals who played a pivotal role in the school’s development include Dr. Justina A. Farolan, Dr. Cristina Doctor, Dr. Liberato Garcia, Dr. Jose B. Dividina, Dr. Modesto G. Villarin, Dr. Melanio P. Austria, and Dr. Launcelot T. Lauigan.
On March 31, 2004, it gained full independence from Culiat High School, becoming a standalone institution officially named Tandang Sora National High School. This milestone marked a period of rapid growth and academic achievement. The school’s reputation soared as it consistently excelled in various academic competitions and initiatives.
To further enhance its educational offerings, TSNHS introduced innovative programs and initiatives. The establishment of learning centers, the strengthening of the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and School-Based Management (SBM), and improvements to computer and laboratory facilities played a crucial role in creating a conducive learning environment. Principals like Mrs. Ruby U. De Jesus, Dr. Arliana A. Arboleda, Dr. Anita S. Bohol, and Dr. Rodel A. Frias were instrumental in driving these positive changes.
Today, under the leadership of Dr. Lorna C. Mendoza, TSNHS continues its commitment to educational excellence. By implementing reforms and focusing on student success, the school strives to provide a quality education that empowers its students and prepares them for the future.
The history of TSNHS is a testament to the resilience, dedication, and innovation of its community. As the school continues to evolve, it remains true to its legacy of providing a nurturing and supportive environment for students to thrive.
